NEW YORK - New Yorkers have no shortage of opinions—or complaints. In 2024, the city's 311 hotline received over 738,000 noise complaints, making it the top issue called in by residents.
The soundtrack of the city
What we know:
Noise complaints led the pack among New York City's 311 non-emergency calls in 2024, totaling over 700,000 complaints. According to city data, these complaints included street and sidewalk noise, vehicle noise, and even helicopter noise. Residential noise topped the list within this category, accounting for more than 356,000 complaints.
Other common 311 calls included reports of public urination, illegal pets, and suspicious neighbors, but noise stood out as the dominant issue. On average, the city received over 2,000 noise-related complaints per day last year.
For many New Yorkers, noise is part of the city’s identity. However, residents are increasingly vocal about disruptions. Longtime locals attribute some of the uptick in complaints to newer residents.
"I feel like it’s the recent people who just moved here… because they’re not used to it like how we are," one New Yorker said.
