NJ Transit: Wire issues causing up to 30-minute delays at Penn Station

Commuters and visitors traveling between New Jersey and New York City are facing major disruptions on Monday.

Service impacts

What we know:

Due to Amtrak overhead wire issues and infrastructure damage inside the Hudson River Tunnels, NJ TRANSIT has announced severe delays and service diversions affecting thousands of riders.

NJ Transit says to expect delays of up to 30 minutes, down from 60 minutes, for trains traveling into and out of New York Penn Station. All Midtown Direct rail service will be diverted to Hoboken Terminal for the rest of the day instead of continuing to New York.

The delays come just days after a fire onboard an Amtrak work train inside one of the Hudson River tunnels snarled train traffic for hours.

Alternate travel

What you can do:

To help commuters reach their destinations, NJ TRANSIT rail tickets and passes are being cross-honored across multiple transit systems. You can use your current rail ticket or pass at no additional cost on the following services:

NJ TRANSIT buses

  • Private carrier buses
  • PATH trains

Valid cross-honoring locations:

  • Hoboken Terminal
  • Newark Penn Station
  • 33rd Street Station (New York)

What they're saying:

FOX 5 NY's Robert Moses spoke with several frustrated commuters on their way to work Monday.

"I’m very late. It’s supposed to be work at eight. I’m gonna be late," one commuter said, as another echoed the sentiment, "Very frustrating when you’re trying to get to work early and on time."

Another commuter expressed his frustration over the frequency of delays.

"It’s terrible, man. It’s every single day it's like this. I think it’s crazy. They make people pay to ride the train when they’re never here. They’re never on time. They’re always canceled. There’s two canceled right now. There’s three delayed, seven in the morning. You know, I’ve been working all night long. I’m ready to go home. It’s annoying."

Big picture view:

Tens of thousands of commuters and visitors will soon rely on NJ Transit to get around the area for the World Cup, America250 events and Knicks NBA Finals.
