NEW JERSEY (FOX 5 NEWS) - Sports history is being made in New Jersey. The state high school football champion is guaranteed to be from Newark. Weequahic High and Malcolm X. Shabazz High are Newark rivals with a long history.
The players toned down the trash talk just long enough for Mayor Ras Baraka to say a few words. The schools are just a few miles apart. They are both from the tough gritty streets of this city and have the opportunity to make a difference.
The teams stood together side by side. But as coaches Brian Logan and Darnell Grant accepted their honorary plaques, it was clear that both sides will fight hard finish on top.
The teams will play at a neutral location Saturday: Keane College. Shabazz will come in as the underdog as they just lost a regular season game on thanksgiving to Weequahic.
