NEW YORK (FOX5NY) - The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for New York City and other parts of the tristate area in effect from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, August 22, 2017.
New York City's air-conditioned cooling centers will be open during normal hours on Tuesday. These centers are located in certain libraries, community centers, senior centers, and NYCHA facilities. To find the nearest cooling center, visit the city's Beat the Heat website or call 311.
Emergency Management Commissioner Joseph Esposito is urging New Yorkers to go to a cooling center if you need to, drink plenty of water, and check on vulnerable neighbors such as the elderly, the very young, and anyone with a pre-existing medical condition.
If you can, stay out of the sun and avoid strenuous activity during the sun's peak hours, officials said. If you do have to spend time outdoors, wear lightweight clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunscreen on all exposed skin.
The weather forecast calls for high heat and humidity. The highs in and around New York City are expected to be in the low-90s but the heat index will make the air feel closer to 100 degrees.
An advisory was also issued in New Jersey.
