NEW ORLEANS - The FBI is revealing new details in their investigation as they try to determine what motivated a Houston man to drive his car into a crowd in New Orleans, killing 14 people and injuring 57 others on New Year's Day.
Investigating the New Orleans attacker’s motive
The backstory:
According to the FBI, Shamsud-Din Jabbar picked up a rented pickup truck in Houston on Dec. 30 and drove to New Orleans on the evening of Dec. 31.
The FBI says Jabbar posted videos declaring his support for ISIS and said he initially considered harming his family and friends.
Shortly after 3 a.m. on New Year’s Day, authorities say Jabbar drove into a crowd on Bourbon Street in the pickup truck with an ISIS flag attached to the trailer hitch.
He was killed in a shootout with police.
The FBI believes he acted alone.
What's new:
On Tuesday, the FBI said evidence in the investigation showed that Jabbar became a more devout Muslim in 2022 and began to isolate himself. He reportedly started following extremist views around the spring of 2024.
What led up to the New Orleans attack
What we know:
On Tuesday, the FBI released new details on Jabbar’s movements and online activity leading up to the attack.
According to the FBI, on Nov. 10, Jabbar took a train from Houston to New Orleans and looked at an apartment for rent on Orleans Street. He took a bus back to Texas that evening.
The FBI says he applied to rent the apartment a few days after, but he later told the landlord that he changed his mind.
The FBI released a new photo of Shamsud-Din Jabbar on Bourbon Street while in New Orleans looking at an apartment on Orleans Street in the French Quarter.
The FBI says a review of his electronics also revealed online searches as late as mid-November about how to access a balcony on Bourbon Street, Mardi Gras, and information on several shootings in the city.
Just hours before the New Year’s Day attack, the FBI says he also looked up information about a car that rammed into a crowd at a German Christmas market just ten days before.
