New Jersey police arrest man suspected of killing his mother

CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) — Authorities have captured a Camden man who allegedly shot and killed his mother at their city home.

Camden County Sheriff's officers arrested 22-year-old Pedro Mercado around 8 p.m. Friday.

That came about three hours after 38-year-old Iris Sanchez was shot in the chest. She was taken to a hospital but was pronounced dead there a short time later.

Authorities say Mercado fled the scene after the shooting. No other injuries were reported in the incident.

It wasn't known Saturday if Mercado has retained an attorney.

A motive for the shooting has not been disclosed.
