New admiral at helm of First Coast Guard District

BOSTON (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard has appointed a new commander for the First Coast Guard District.

Rear Admiral Andrew Tiongson took over the new position during a changing of the guard ceremony in Boston on Monday. He relieves Rear Admiral Steven Poulin, who was awarded a Gold Star for his service with the First District.

Tiongson previously served as the assistant commandant for resources and chief financial officer for the Coast Guard. The Boston Globe reports he called his new position "a dream come true."

Poulin, who oversaw the conviction of "The Codfather," will serve as the director of operations at the Coast Guard base in Miami.

The First Coast Guard District is the oldest in the United States. It covers eight states from the U.S.–Canadian border to New Jersey.
