Nature's Variety dog food recall

Dog food producer Nature's Variety has issued a voluntary recall of its Instinct Raw Chicken Formula due to possible salmonella contamination.

The St. Louis, Missouri-based company issued the recall on July 24.

The products affected have a 'Best By' date of 04/27/16 and were sold in the United States, and in a limited quantity, in Canada.

The recalled products were packaged in the following forms:

UPC# 769949611431 – Instinct Raw Chicken Formula Bites for Dogs 4 lb.; Best By 04/27/16

UPC# 769949611448 – Instinct Raw Chicken Formula Bites for Dogs 7 lb.; Best By 04/27/16

UPC# 769949611486 – Instinct Raw Chicken Formula Patties for Dogs 6 lb.; Best By 04/27/16

The 'Best By' date can be found on the back of the package below the seal.

Nature's Variety says no illnesses have been reported, but became aware of a potential issue after the Food and Drug Administration found a surveillance sample tested positive for Salmonella.

In humans, Salmonella can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.

In dogs, the bacteria can cause similar symptoms to those experienced by humans along with decreased appetite.
