NEW YORK (FOX 5 NEWS) - Nassau County police have found no evidence that County Executive Ed Mangano sexted with public relations consultant Karin Murphy Caro of BluChip Marketing.
"The phones were not hacked or spoofed," Det. Sgt. Patrick Ryder, the lead investigator, said. "This document could have been created by anyone with an agenda." Ryder said neither Mangano nor Caro's phones were hacked.
"Sitting down with a County Executive and telling him you'll walk him out in handcuffs -- it was not comfortable," Ryder said. "And he looked me in the eye and he swore to me... 'I am not involved with that woman or any of those sext messages.'"
Ryder explained that it is impossible to break into someone's phone unless you have the person's username and password. In this case, both Mangano and Caro let investigators examine their phones. They found nothing -- not even in deleted messages. What they did find in the document was that someone simply copied and pasted sexts from the Internet that don't even resemble messages from an iPhone.
"If it was an iMessage, an iMessage has a blue background, white font," Ryder said. "If it was a text message, it has a green background, white font."
As for an explanation why Mangano didn't sign a case report, Ryder insisted it isn't unusual.
"I would make sure I have a subject that I'm going to be arresting," Ryder said. "It is sensitive in nature because of the business that these people are in."
Mangano issued a statement: "As I stated from the moment this matter was brought to my attention, my family and I are the victims of a hoax perpetuated by a deranged individual. I can only hope that the media will report the truth in the same manner as they reported the outrageous lies against me and the other victim."
Who is responsible for the hoax is still unknown.
Caro's attorney, Anthony Capetola, hasn't returned our calls. Neither has Caro. She did however tweet two words earlier Thursday: "Thank you."
