NEW YORK (FOX5NY.COM) - The Nassau County Police Department got word Wednesday of an MS-13 gang threat against an officer. The threat was of a possible assassination attempt in the area of Hempstead.
Police made several arrests. Then another threat was made hours later.
Cops say they aren't taking this lightly and are taking action to protect their own.
"MS-13 wants to threaten a cop in this county—MS-13 is going to get an answer," Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said.
MS-13 members are reportedly making the threats in retaliation for many of their own getting arrested.
"There was a threat that an individual was planning to execute a cop and did have weapons in his vehicle," Ryder said. "There but by the grace of God that didn't happen that night."
Police are responding with more patrols.
"We're doubling up the cars that surround the area, both in the 5th and 1st precincts," Ryder said. "When you're a gang member in this county, you don't belong here—we're going to go out and do our enforcement."
The Nassau County Police Benevolent Association was announcing a $25,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest of the suspected MS-13 gang member who issued the call for the killing of a police officer.
The NYPD added its own statement.
"All members of the NYPD were provided with details of the threat, and as always, have been reminded to remain vigilant, on and off duty," Deputy Commissioner Phillip Walzak said. "The NYPD continues to work with local, state and federal law enforcement partners to investigate these threats."
Authorities arrested several suspects but aren't confirming if they are connected to the threats. The police are offering a $25,000 reward to anyone with information that will lead to an arrest and conviction of someone threatening to kill an officer in the county.
