MOORESVILLE, N.C. (FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) - Mooresville police are investigating after an officer was shot and killed during a routine traffic stop.

K9 Officer Jordan Sheldon, 32, was shot during the traffic stop shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday, May 4 on West Plaza Drive. He was taken to the hospital but later died from his injuries. App users click here.

"You can't prepare for what we're experiencing, it's emotional," said Mooresville Chief of Police Damon Williams. "We're angry, we're hurt, we're sad. There's a roller coaster of emotions that we are dealing with."

Police said the suspect, 28-year-old Michael Aldana, ran away from the scene and was later found in a nearby apartment dead from a self-inflicted gunshot.

The motive for the shooting is still unclear.

Sheldon served as an officer with the Mooresville Police Department for six years. He was a K9 officer, partnered with police dog Ramón. Those who knew him, described him as an officer who served with dignity.

"Utterly devastated. That's the only word that I can think of to help to describe so many are feeling in this community," said Mayor of Mooresville Miles Atkins. "This isn't a number for us, this is a real person. We're heartbroken. The pain and sorrow that we feel, can't express it."

Local and state law enforcement are helping with the investigation.
