Mom, girlfriend of Rutgers star charged

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) — The mother and girlfriend of Rutgers University football star Leonte Carroo face charges stemming from an altercation that led to his suspension from the team. Police have charged Lavern Carroo, 40, of Edison, Maria Vega, 20, of Fort Lee and Vega's father, Juan, 52, with simple assault and disorderly conduct.

It's not known if they have lawyers who can comment on the charges.

Leonte Carroo has pleaded not guilty to a domestic violence-related assault charge after authorities say he slammed a woman whom he was known to date onto concrete after a football game on Sept. 12 in Piscataway.

The woman sustained injuries to her hip, hands, elbow and head.

The arrest of the senior captain came after six current and three former Rutgers players were charged with a series of violent crimes.
