ATLANTA - It is a triumph after tragedy; an amazing comeback story
"At first, it was tough," said Gwinnett County mom, Cindy Martinez.
But Martinez- a former marine -- is tough and stronger than many.
She beat flesh eating bacteria; battled back with 2 prosthetic legs after the rare infection forced doctors to amputate her legs below the knees and part of her arm.
"I'm feeling great," Martinez said.
Martinez still doesn't know how she got infected. Her series of surgeries began in May and her rehab picked up in June. Her lead doctor at Shepherd Center told FOX 5 she had not seen anyone bounce back--walking so well so quickly. Martinez credits her long hours of therapy and her marine background.
She told FOX 5 News she must remain positive because her condition is not going to change. Martinez said she is thankful for the outpouring of support from the community and the little things like getting a chance to go to her son's school to eat with him in the lunchroom.
"It was the first time he got to see me walk," said the 35- year old mom.
Martinez is expected to be released within days.
