Miss USA, Miss Universe 1995 Chelsi Smith dies

Former Miss USA and Miss Universe Chelsi Smith died on Saturday at the age of 45.  The Texas native reportedly lost her battle with cancer.

A family statement said Smith was one of the only bi-racial women "to win the pageant world’s triple crown: Miss Texas, Miss USA, and Miss Universe."

“We are heartbroken to share the news that Chelsi Smith has passed away following a protracted illness. Chelsi was our loving daughter, niece, and friend. We will miss her infectious laughter, joie de vivre, and free spirit. She left an indelible mark on all those who knew her."

The Miss Universe pageant tweeted its condolences.

A public memorial service is planned for the coming months in Houston, Texas.
