Med school bound EMT on final shift killed in crash

Authorities in New Jersey say an EMT was killed when a car collided with an ambulance heading to a call in a neighboring town.

Hinal Patel, an EMT on her last shift before starting medical school, was in the Spotswood ambulance's front passenger seat when the crash occurred shortly before 8 a.m. Saturday in East Brunswick.

Authorities say the 22-year-old Piscataway resident and a colleague were on their way to assist at a car accident in East Brunswick.

The ambulance had its emergency lights and sirens activated, and no patients were inside. A car driven by 58-year-old Kathleen Meade of East Brunswick struck the ambulance in an intersection, overturning the emergency vehicle and causing it to slide into another car, killing Patel.

Meade and the ambulance driver, 24-year-old Mark Seube of Hamilton, suffered injuries non-life-threatening. Both were being treated at hospitals.
