(AP Photo/Richard Drew) NEW YORK (FOX5NY) - The U.S. Coast Guard called off the search Friday morning for a man who went overboard from a Staten Island Ferry boat near Governors Island late Thursday.
According to the NYPD, the man jumped off the Staten Island-bound Spirit of America at around 10:15 p.m. The ferry crew threw a life ring into the water after he went in and deployed their small boat in an effort to rescue him.
Vessels from Coast Guard, NYPD, and FDNY and helicopters from the Coast Guard and NYPD searched for the man until just after midnight with the Coast Guard continuing the search through the night.
Multiple people reported seeing the man go into the water. Surveillance camera footage showed him going overboard.
The ferry involved in the incident docked in Staten Island at around 11 p.m. Authorities said ferry service was temporarily suspended during the search.
The police investigation continued.
