Salina, Kan. - It was a scare for those at a Kansas movie theater after a man’s gun goes off- shooting himself in the leg.
The shooting happened inside a Salina movie theater at Central Mall during a showing Friday night.
Inside that movie theater, witnesses say emotions went from feeling danger and fear- to helping the man who police say accidentally shot himself in the leg.
Heather Myers and her husband Domenic were inside the theater, and say they’re happy the bullet didn’t hit anyone else.
“At first what popped into my mind was that someone popped a bag of candy or something and goofing off or something,” said Myers. “This guy started shouting ‘Oh my God, I just shot myself I just got my conceal and carry,’ and then everybody jumped up and that’s when we heard call 911.”
After July 1, a law took effect saying gun owners no longer need a permit or training to carry a concealed weapon.
“I believe in protecting yourself, but it is scary knowing they’re in public places,” said Myers. “And I feel absolutely terrible for the gentleman that shot himself, but the first thing I thought of was thank God he didn’t shoot anybody else.”
Police say no evacuation was ordered because they treated the situation as a medical emergency.
No one else at the theater was hurt.
