TAMPA, Fla. - Lowry Park Zoo has welcomed its first-ever Malayan tiger cub into the world.
The zoo released adorable video Tuesday of the tiny cub born on Sept. 11 to a Malayan tiger named "Bzui."
"The cub is growing normally and nursing well," said Dr. Larry Killmar, the Zoo's Chief Zoological Officer. "Our Zoo is proud to be working to preserve a species like the Malayan tiger, which is facing a growing number of threats in the wild."
With only 250 Malayan tigers left in the wild, the tiger is critically endangered, one step away from becoming extinct. Along with the breeding program as a part of the species survival plan, the zoo is working to study the tigers to help maintain the population.
The cub will not be on exhibit with its mother for several weeks to allow Bzui to nurse and care for the cub as she would in the wild.
Bzui joined the zoo last spring to be with her mate, "Mata."
