Thousands of fans packed Madison Square Garden for the finals of one of the world's biggest online gaming championships. Fans screamed for players who weren't even in the arena but rather were competing remotely from all over the world in a wildly popular multi-player battle game called "League of Legends."

Characters called summoners control teams of champions who battle other teams for territory.

Sponsors of the North American finals say the game is played by 65 million people worldwide. Once players get started, many are hooked for years.

There's an element of magic and special powers too that can help one team beat another. Being part of a team and fighting for a common cause is an added attraction.

Another reasons it's so popular is that you can participate in the competition even if you're a beginner.
