Leaders to discuss Gateway project

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx, U.S. Sen. Cory Booker and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie will sit down next week to discuss plans for replacing the century-old Hudson River tunnel crossing.

Department of Transportation spokesman Jon Romano says the three will meet Tuesday to discuss the proposed $14 billion Gateway project.

State and federal officials agree that they need to move forward with a plan quickly but are in dispute over how to pay for it.

Foxx sent a letter to Christie and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo urging them to meet to put together a strategy for building new crossings under the river after major train delays in July.

Christie spokeswoman Nicole Sizemore says the governor is willing to meet with Foxx at Booker's request to see what the Obama administration has in mind.
