Cops say man with knife attacks cops in East Village

The NYPD says two officers saw a man with a knife arguing with another man inside a deli. Cops ordered the man to drop the knife but he refused. Cops opened fire. Kayla Mamelak reports.

Cops shot a knife-wielding man in the East Village Thursday morning marking the third police-involved shooting in the city in 36 hours, according to police.

The incident occurred at about 6:40 a.m. in the area of East 10th Street and Third Avenue.

Two female officers were followed inside the Healthy Green Gourmet by a 55-year-old man who threatened the cops with a knife, said police. One of the officers attempted to subdue the man with a Taser. The suspect then confronted a worker before attempting to leave the deli. As he tried to get out, he shoved a female officer.

Once outside, the man motioned towards his waistband and refused repeated demands to stop advancing, added cops. The officer and another cop who responded to the scene opened fire on the man striking him in the arm and torso.

The man was taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition. Four officers were taken to a local hospital in stable condition.

Tuesday night cops shot and killed a man who had shot another man in Crown Heights.

Police were involved in another shooting just before Midnight after a man ambushed a police officer and stabbed him in the neck in Flatbush. Two other officers were shot in the hands.
