Jimmy Carter dies at 100: NY, NJ leaders react to death of former president

Following The Carter Center's announcement that former U.S. President Jimmy Carter passed away on Dec. 29, 2024, New York politicians and state leaders rallied support around the Carter family and offered their condolences.

Carter's last public appearance was at his late wife Rosalynn Carter's funeral on Nov. 29, 2023. He was also briefly seen watching a U.S. Navy flyover with F-18s and World War II planes on his 100th birthday.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul

"President Jimmy Carter embodied decency and integrity throughout his life of public service. I'll never forget as a teenager meeting him in Buffalo. He was an inspiration to me and so many Americans," NY Governor Kathy Hochul said in a statement. "Our hearts are with the Carter family during this difficult time.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams

"President Jimmy Carter was America's longest living president in history, but he will be remembered for far more than that," Adams said in a statement on X. "He was a true public servant who dedicated his life to giving back and not just during his presidency."

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy

"President Jimmy Carter was a man whose tremendous faith was equaled by his sense of moral courage and purpose. He saw a nation scarred by Watergate and sought to heal its wounds and restore its faith. He saw the promise for peace in the Middle East and took the first steps toward that elusive goal, including personally brokering a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt. He saw a world imperiled by the threat of nuclear war and endeavored to protect it," Murphy said in a statement. 

New Jersey Senator Andy Kim

"President Jimmy Carter gave us a pure and lasting example of a public servant. His life and legacy will forever be a lesson on the power in one person’s will to do good," Kim said in a post on X.

President-elect Donald Trump

"I just heard of the news about the passing of President Jimmy Carter. Those of us who have been fortunate to have served as President understand this is a very exclusive club, and only we can relate to the enormous responsibility of leading the Greatest Nation in History," Trump said in a post on Truth social.
