In retrial, suspect convicted of murdering Karina Vetrano
NEW YORK (FOX 5 NY) - A jury in Queens has convicted Chanel Lewis of murdering Karina Vetrano when she was out for a run in 2016. This was the second trial for Lewis; his first trial ended in a hung jury.
Vetrano, 30, was running near her family's home in Howard Beach when Lewis attacked her, prosecutors said.
Lewis, of East New York, Brooklyn, raped and strangled her in a marshy area of Spring Creek Park in the Gateway National Recreation Area, federally owned property, the DA said.
When Vetrano didn't come home from her run, her father, who usually runs with her, went out looking for her. He found her body in a secluded area near the pedestrian path.
At both trials, prosecutors presented DNA evidence that tied Lewis to the crime and a videotape of his confession.
