Heavy rain moving into New York area; flood alerts in effect

NEW YORK (FOX 5 NY) - Heavy rain is coming to the tristate area overnight and into the weekend. The National Weather Service has issued various flood-related alerts for dozens of counties in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.

"A slow-moving frontal system will approach the region tonight into Saturday. Heavy rain will become likely late tonight through Saturday morning," the National Weather Service said. "Total rainfall amounts will be around 1 inch with locally higher amounts possible. Excessive runoff will be possible which would lead to flooding of urban and poor drainage areas. Flash Flood Watches are in effect for much of the area, Flash Flood Warnings are posted in several counties, and Coastal Flood Statements apply to a few counties.

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is very dangerous.

The National Weather Service urges you to never drive through flood waters.

"Water may be deeper than it appears and can hide hazards such as sharp objects, washed out road surfaces, electrical wires, chemicals, etc.," the NWS advises. "A vehicle caught in swiftly moving water can be swept away in seconds 12 inches of water can float a car or small SUV, 18 inches of water can carry away large vehicles."

Don't try walking through flood waters, either. Just six inches of moving water can knock you down, according to weather officials.

"If you are trapped by moving water, move to the highest possible point and call 911 if possible," the NWS said.
