Heavy rain, high wind, flooding in tristate area
NEW YORK (FOX 5 NEWS) - While the latest models suggest that Hurricane Joaquin will head out to sea and will not hit the East Coast, a nor'easter-like weather system is bringing some nasty weather to the Tristate New York area, prompting weather officials to issue flood alerts for many counties in the region.
Fox 5 Chief Meteorologist Nick Gregory says that the pressure gradient between the two systems is creating a strong northeast to easterly airflow which is resulting in windy conditions, particularly along the coast. A Coastal Flood Warning was also in effect for the Jersey Shore with a Coastal Flood Watch up for the rest of the area. [DOWNLOAD THE FOX 5 WEATHER APP]
"Widespread tidal flooding will occur through multiple successive high tide cycles through this weekend," the NWS said in a bulletin. "Tides through the weekend will likely be near or at the Friday high tide levels. A building surge into Saturday combined with 6 to 10 foot breaking waves and periods of moderate or heavy rain will contribute to the tidal inundation flooding."
