NEW YORK (AP) -- Wildlife conservation officials said a deer that was captured at a New York City public housing complex has died before it could be relocated.
The buck drew crowds for about two weeks at Jackie Robinson Park in Harlem. Some residents called it J.R.
It was captured Thursday and was taken to an animal shelter.
City officials said Friday that despite their concerns about the life-threatening stress of travel on the animal, they were handing it over to the state Department of Environmental Conservation for a trip upstate. The city Parks Department had said euthanasia would be more humane.
City and state officials had protracted discussions over the issue.
The DEC said in a statement Friday that the deer died around noon while its rescuers were arriving to pick it up.
