Good Housekeeping's kitchen of the future is here now
NEW YORK (FOX5NY.COM) - If you're anything like me in the kitchen then you find cooking to be a bit overwhelming. But the folks at Good Housekeeping are introducing us to their kitchen of the future, which they say is a game changer by making cooking easier and more advanced at the same time.
"What's really powerful about the technology is that it gives you perfectly precise and repeatable results," said Betty Gold, the magazine's senior editor and kitchen product analyst. She gets to spend her work days in the high-tech kitchen of the future where she tests what she calls the "latest and greatest" appliances.
Up first, the NutriBullet Balance blender.
"It's a smart single-serve high-performance blender that has an embedded scale in the blender base, so it takes the guesswork out of making a smoothie," Gold said.
Next, she showed us the Miele Built-In Coffee Machine.
"It's basically like having a barista in your own kitchen. So it allows you to fully customize everything about a cup of coffee that can be customized," Gold said. "We're talking grind settings, how strong do you like your shot of espresso, how firmly do you like your milk to be frothed on top of your cappuccino."
If you have a small kitchen that is not conducive to cooking, you're not tech-savvy, or you just find cooking to be a hassle, Gold said these appliances are only supposed to make your lives easier. But the catch is that many of them require you to use an app on your smartphone, including the ChefSteps Joule sous vide appliance.
"So sous vide cooking is pretty simple. All it means is you're gently cooking protein in a water bath that's being held at a perfectly precise temperature for an extended period of time," Gold explained. "You go into the Joule app, you select, let's say, I'm cooking a sirloin steak and I like it medium-rare. It's going to heat your water to a perfect 129 degrees and you lower the steak in, in a Ziploc bag and it holds it there and cooks it for a few hours."
The appliances range in price from $100 to thousands of dollars. And despite the price tag, their popularity is only growing.
Even if you're not into the high-tech movement, you might find yourself taking advantage of this modern kitchen in the not-so-distant-future.
