Fire destroys 5 homes in Newark-Irvington

A massive fire destroyed five homes along Montgomery Street, straddling the Newark-Irvington border, leaving 27 people homeless, including five children. FOX 5's Arthur Chi'en has the story.

A devastating fire engulfed five homes along Montgomery Street, straddling the border of Newark and Irvington, New Jersey, on Tuesday night, leaving 27 people homeless and destroying nearly everything in its path.

The fire displaced nine families, including five children, and sent one man to the hospital with a non-fire-related injury.

Authorities report that the fire may have originated in a home occupied by squatters, but the exact cause is still under investigation. 

Witnesses described the blaze as so intense that it could be seen from up to 20 miles away. 

Strong winds made it even more difficult for firefighters to bring the inferno under control.

Large fire tears through Newark, NJ, homes

A fire in Newark, New Jersey is raging through multiple buildings with flames shooting from the rooftops. FOX 5 NY's Dan Rice has the latest information.

Five homes were completely destroyed—two in Newark and three in Irvington.

As the investigation continues, the squatters believed to have been living in the home where the fire started remain unidentified.
