FDNY pension boss busted for drunken crash

NEW YORK (FOX5NY.COM) - The now-former head of the FDNY's pension fund faces charges of drunken driving after a crash in Midtown Manhattan this week.

Video from a bystander shows former firefighter and union boss Stephen Cassidy stumbling and barely able to stand after police say that he crashed his government-issued car at 7th Avenue and West 30th Street shortly before midnight on Tuesday.

Daniel was walking past the scene and saw a Toyota Prius on the sidewalk and started recording. He said Cassidy was not responding to anyone and then some bystanders led him away.

Authorities charged Cassidy with drunken driving and cocaine possession. Police said Cassidy has the cocaine in his wallet.

Video obtained by the New York Post shows police officers escorting Cassidy out of a police precinct after his arrest.

Cassidy, 62, was the longest-serving president of the Uniformed Firefighters Association before being appointed in 2016 by fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro as the FDNY's pension boss.

"In light of the incident involving Stephen Cassidy last night and his subsequent arrest, effective immediately, I have removed him from his position as Executive Director of the New York City Fire Pension Fund," Nigro said in a statement.

The crash happened just around the corner from a police precinct, which appears to be where good Samaritans were trying to take Cassidy.

Daniel said that Cassidy was unstable and tried to walk away but people told him, "You're not going anywhere" and flagged down a cop at the corner.
