Electrical wiring sparks 'accidental' fire at Herald Square Holiday Market: FDNY

The fire that tore through the Herald Square Holiday Market on Monday morning was "accidental", caused by electric wiring, the FDNY stated in a post on X.

The fire destroyed at least four vendor booths, leaving small business owners devastated.

The FDNY said the fire happened around 4 a.m. along Broadway between 35th and 36th Streets.

Sixty firefighters and EMS crews responded to the scene.

One firefighter sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The firefighter who was seriously injured has been taken to the hospital.

Urban Space, the company that oversees the market, called the incident a "devastating moment" for vendors.

"This is a devastating moment for our market family, especially during what should be a joyful holiday season," the company said in a statement. "We are actively working with local officials to determine the cause of the fire and ensure the site is secure and safe for the rest of the vendors."

Recovery efforts are now underway, and the community is stepping in to help. A GoFundMe account has been set up to support the affected vendors as they work to rebuild.
