MONTAUK, N.Y. (AP) - The East Hampton town board will consider whether bars and nightclubs in Montauk should be required to use mechanical devices to count their patrons.
Town Supervisor Larry Cantwell tells Newsday that fire code enforcers would still keep tabs on occupancy figures. But he says owners and operators should be personally accountable in preventing overcrowding.
A crackdown on businesses that attract a young, rowdy crowd was launched in the hamlet after an especially raucous Fourth of July weekend.
Law enforcers made more than a dozen arrests and issued numerous violation summonses and traffic tickets.
A public hearing on the issue will be held Aug. 20.
