LONDON (FOX NEWS) - Drones were spotted over Gatwick Airport outside London, forcing all flights to be grounded. Police don't suspect the drones are terror-related but they believe the operators know what they're doing.
"Each time we believe we get close to the operator the drone disappears so I am absolutely convinced it's a deliberate act to disrupt Gatwick Airport," Superintendent Justin Burtenshaw of the airport police.
Gatwick is the second busiest airport in Great Britain. Tens of thousands are now stranded on one of the busiest active travel days of the year. More than 100,000 people were expected to fly through Gatwick on Thursday alone. Those delayed passengers are now crammed into the airport's two main terminals. Many complained about the lack of contact with airport staff.
Officials said they're focused on bringing the drones down, so the airport can reopen. While they understand passengers are uncomfortable. They said safety comes first.
Under British law, flying a drone within 1 kilometer of an airport carries a penalty of up to five years behind bars.
