Deadly crash at New Jersey toll plaza

An elderly woman was killed in a fiery crash at a toll plaza on the Garden State Parkway on Tuesday afternoon.

Patricia Lavelle was pronounced dead shortly after her car struck the concrete divider between the northbound toll lanes at the Union toll plaza.

The New Jersey State Police say it happened about 2:30 p.m. at the toll plaza at mile marker 142.  The aftermath of the scene showed a vehicle perpendicular to the plaza and the car had been on fire.

Authorities haven't said if the crash caused the Neptune resident's death or if it was due to a medical condition.

Police did not release details on the speed of the car that started the chain reaction crash.  The crash closed many of the lanes at the toll plaza and caused significant delays leading into the rush hour.
