De Blasio investigated for campaign violations, report says

NEW YORK (FOX 5 NY) - After receiving a memo from the state Board of Elections, Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance Jr. is now investigating Mayor Bill de Blasio and his campaign team for alleged violations of campaign finances laws two years ago.

The issue at question is whether the mayor's his fundraising team circumvented donor limits when raising money for Democratic state Senate candidates, the NY Daily News reported.

The allegations were waged by Risa Sugarman, attorney for the Board of Elections, in a memo to Vance.

"I have determined that reasonable cause exists to believe a violation warranting criminal prosecution has taken place," Sugarman wrote in the memo. "The violations discovered by this investigation can only be described as willful and flagrant."

It's the latest wrench in an alleged corruption probe involving City Hall.

"Everything we've done we've done with integrity," de Blasio has repeatedly said. The mayor also said that the fact that the Board of Elections memo was made public is "outrageous."

"A lot of very good people have had their names dragged through the mud these last few weeks -- a lot of people that I respect greatly and have worked for ears," de Blasio said. "That's not right. That's not fair.

An attorney for the mayor told the NY Daily News that the accusations stem from a "politically motivated document" that showed “complete disregard of the long-recognized principles underlying our state’s election laws."
