De Blasio asks for millions for Trump security

NEW YORK (FOX5NY) - The de Blasio administration is asking the federal government to pick up millions of dollars in costs related to security around Trump Tower since the election.

Mayor de Blasio sent letters to President Obama and Congress asking for the money.  He is seeking a reported $35 million for the 75 days between the election and inauguration.  That comes out to about $467,000 a day.

De Blasio called the expenses "extraordinary" to protect President-elect Donald Trump and his family.

Trump Tower is a 58-story high rise on Fifth Ave. between 56th and 57th Streets in Manhattan.  The building is located along several highly traveled bus routes and is near high end hotels and stores, including Tiffany's, Louis Vuitton and Apple.

In his letter de Blasio said:  "No other President in modern history has had his primary residence located in such a densely-populated neighborhood."

Since the election, the NYPD has deployed extra officers and tactical teams to the area, set up screening checkpoints and posted traffic agents.
