Dad seats family in restaurant, goes outside, deliberately crashes car into building to kill them
BESSEMER CITY, NORTH CAROLINA - A father brought his family into a restaurant, had them seated, then went back outside and crashed his car through the wall deliberately in an attempt to kill them, police in North Carolina said.
Two people, including the man's daughter, were killed in the incident Sunday afternoon at the "Surf & Turf Restaurant" in Bessemer City.
Police said that Roger Self intentionally crashed his car into the restaurant, killing daughter Katelyn Self. His daughter-in-law was the other victim who died. This son, wife and granddaughter were all injured.
Self was taken into custody and is charged with murder. Amanda Self was a nurse at CaroMont Health in Gastonia, North Carolina.
Katelyn Self was a Gaston County Sheriff's Deputy. Her husband, Joshbeing Self survived the attack but was seriously hurt.
The suspect's pastor, the Rev. Austin Rammell says the suspect was suffering from severe depression and anxiety and had struggled to find psychiatric care. He said Self was an "icon" in his community for decades and had recently developed severe mental illness.
