NEW YORK (FOX5NY.COM) - Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico last September, knocking out power to many areas for months. Falling debris made many roads impassable and it destroyed homes.
Some 40 volunteers from New York are going to Puerto Rico on Sunday for two weeks to help homeowners rebuild.
Nearly 3,000 CUNY students applied to volunteer for the New York Stands with Puerto Rico Recovery and Rebuilding Initiative, launched by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
Cuomo said he and his family are going to Puerto Rico to help rebuild.
Every week for the next eight weeks, a group of CUNY Service Corps students will be sent to Puerto Rico to volunteer with different nonprofits. They will work five days a week rebuilding homes, repairing doors, windows and roofs, and removing mold. Students have the option to receive credit for their volunteer work.
