NEW YORK (FOX5NY) - Police have arrested a man on murder charges after the brutal stabbing death of a Staten Island grandmother.
The NYPD says the attack happened on Monday at about 2:15 p.m. about a block from her home as she was returning from the bank. Police say that 27-year-old Dantey Moore walked up to Geetha Howie and started stabbing her repeatedly. The attack appeared to be unprovoked and witnesses described Moore as crazed.
A neighbor, 56-year-old Mark Long, saw the attack and was slashed in the arm when he tried to intervene.
Howie, 63, was rushed to Richmond University Medical Center with stab wounds to her face and torso but it was too late to save her.
Investigators say they believe Moore didn't know Howie and that the attack was random.
Moore is charged with murder, assault and weapons charges. A relative told the Daily News that Moore suffered from bouts of rage, and had been hospitalized in the past for abusing the drug angel dust.
It was unclear if Moore had a lawyer.
