NEW YORK (FOX 5 NEWS) - Finding a way to band together and restore safety is how the National Night Out Against Crime took shape more than three decades ago.
Mayor Bill de Blasio, Police Commissioner James O'Neill, dozens of cops, and hundreds of Staten Islanders came out for one event held at Midland Beach FDR Boardwalk. If the hot dogs they went through are any indication, then thousands came.
There was lots food, the beach was the backdrop, and the DJ set the tone.
About 70 different events like this played out across all five boroughs Tuesday night. One officer told me that having the opportunity to meet the community and build relationships is great.
The mayor and commissioner pointed out that when National Night Out began 34 years ago, the city was very different and they paid tribute to the NYPD.
