Coney Island music venue under construction
NEW YORK (FOX 5 NEWS) - In just two months, a construction project in Coney Island will transform into New York's newest entertainment venue. It is called the Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk.
Sting and Peter Gabriel will officially kick things off on July 3. The summer lineup also includes the Beach Boys, Jill Scott, Counting Crows and Boston.
The shows will be intimate, with just 5000 seats here. The vibe is part beach party, part old Coney Island charm.
The venue is built into the landmarked Child's Restaurant building, which dates back to 1923. Original terracotta detail is being preserved. But there are plenty of modern touches, like a 7,000-square-foot rooftop bar overlooking the stage. The band shell will be covered to protect from inclement weather.
In keeping with the theme of enriching the entire neighborhood, the companies that will be operating the venue want to hire people from the area.
