Just in time for summer, the Riegelmann Boardwalk at Coney Island is being designated a scenic landmark.

The honor came on the boardwalk's 95th birthday. The iconic waterfront promenade officially opened May 15, 1923.

The 2.7-mile boardwalk between West 37th Street and Brighton 15th Street is a destination for New Yorkers and tourists alike.

The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission voted unanimously on the decision. The landmarks preservation commissioner said the boardwalk is a part of the city's culture and a beloved public space.

But it has seen some changes. Hurricane Sandy destroyed a lot of it so it was rebuilt.

Now it is the city's 11th scenic landmark, joining two other Coney Island attractions: the Cyclone and the Wonder Wheel.

The scenic landmark destination will protect the boardwalk and the beachfront for generations to come.
