NEW YORK - New Yorkers no longer need to wait for designated dates to dispose of their Christmas trees. The city’s Department of Sanitation (DSNY) has announced that Christmas tree collection is now available year-round thanks to the expansion of citywide curbside composting.
Residents can simply place their "naked" trees—free of decorations, ornaments, and stands—out on their regular curbside composting day. The initiative aligns with the city’s broader efforts to turn organic waste into compost or renewable energy.
"Are you a family that takes the tree down on Christmas? Do you hold out for all twelve days? Rather wait until May? It’s all ok!" the DSNY said in a statement.
How It Works
- Natural Trees and Wreaths: Place them curbside on your composting day alongside other organic materials. Do not wrap them in plastic.
- Artificial Trees: Remove any metal parts and place them with your metal recycling.
