Child told Paterno of sex abuse by Sandusky: court docs

NEW YORK (FOX 5 NY) - In a court order involving an insurance company for Penn State University, a child allegedly reported to former football head coach Joe Paterno that he was sexually molested by former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky in 1976.

The allegation was made by a victim in a deposition as part of a pending insurance case, reported PennLive.com.

The order also references child sex abuse by Sandusky in 1987 and 1988. Unnamed assistant coaches reportedly witnessed inappropriate conduct between Sandusky and unidentified children.

Paterno, who died in January 2012, was never charged with any crimes. He maintained that he knew nothing about Sandusky's sexual assault on children.

On Friday, his son took to social media to slam the allegations calling them "bunk."

"It would be great if everyone waited to see the substance of the allegation before they assume it's true. Because it's not," said Scott Paterno.

Penn Staters for Responsible Stewardship, a group formed in the wake of the scandal to oust board members who voted to fire Paterno, released a statement calling for Penn State officials to produce all records related to the insurance case "so that they may be evaluated fairly and fully in an environment of complete transparency."

Sandusky was convicted of 45 counts of child sex abuse in June 2012.

He and his lawyers were in court Thursday in an attempt to secure a re-trial.
