NYC shooting near park leaves 2 injured
Two people were shot in Brownsville, Brooklyn on Saturday night, the NYPD said. FOX 5 NY's Kendall Green has the story.
BROOKLYN - Kev and several Brownsville, Brooklyn residents noticed a group gathering Saturday night before it took an ugly turn.
"They were having a good time, setting up, and then I wake up and hear this," Kev told FOX 5 NY. "I saw the police when I was coming off the train," another resident shared about the double shooting.
It happened on Powell Street and Livonia Avenue in Brownsville near some type of gathering where a table with hot food was set up just a day before Father's Day.
Jennifer, on her way home at the time, walked past that function and gathered. It was interrupted by gunfire.
"I came home and the whole area was roped off, and then I saw the gathering, but no one was going to question what happened, so I knew something, it must’ve been a shooting over here," she recalled.
Police say around 11:30, someone shot a 71-year-old woman in the right leg and twice in the torso. They shot a 61-year-old man in the left leg as well.
Both, believed to be innocent bystanders, were taken to Brookdale Hospital in stable condition.
In the same neighborhood, on June 2, a 12-year-old boy was arrested in the shooting death of his 14-year-old cousin. The next day, on June 3, 9 and 11-year-old girls were both shot at a playground.

Brooklyn playground shooting: Mother speaks out
Two girls – ages 9 and 11 – were caught in a crossfire on Monday night in NYC after shots rang out at a Brooklyn playground, the NYPD said. Both girls are expected to be okay. FOX 5 NY's Lisa Evers spoke to the mother of one of the victims.
"It’s just, you become jaded to it. You’re like what happened now," said one resident.
As of June 9, NYPD data shows shooting victims in the 73rd Precinct more than doubled since this time last year from 17 to 35. Shooting incidents are up more than 80% in the same precinct.
Wolve Gardener, an area resident, is shaken by the numbers relying on both his faith and instinct to keep himself safe.
"I also think you have to be very aware of our surroundings and use common sense as well," added Gardener.
Police, at last check, say five people were taken into custody for questioning regarding the shooting, but it's unclear if they'll face charges.
