Bronx woman dead, baby critically injured after falling from apartment balcony

A Bronx woman is dead and her 5-month-old baby girl is in critical condition after they fell from an apartment balcony Tuesday morning.

What we know:

The NYPD said the 23-year-old mother and baby were found on the pavement outside 2550 Olinville Avenue in the Allerton section just before 4 a.m.

Officers made the horrific discovery in the back of the building after residents called 911 to report they heard people shouting.

The woman was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital and her daughter, according to sources, was transferred to a high-level infant trauma center on Long Island.

What they're saying:

Sources told FOX 5 NY that the woman and baby were allegedly pushed from their 15th-floor balcony and that police were searching for a person of interest, a man in his 30s, who may have been inside the apartment at the time.

Police said the injuries were "consistent with a fall from an elevated position," but the circumstances remained under investigation.

What we don't know:

The relationship of the mother and daughter to the person of interest was not immediately known.
