THE BRONX - A 16-year-old boy has been charged with murder and five counts of attempted murder in connection to Monday's subway station shooting in the Mount Eden section of the Bronx that left one person dead and five others wounded.
"He’s been identified and apprehended this morning by the members of the 44th Squad and the regional fugitive task force," said the NYPD's Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny.
Earlier in the week, the NYPD released photos of two suspects wanted in connection to the shooting.
According to police, the shooting stemmed from a dispute between two rival gangs who got on the #4 train at separate stops before spotting one another.
A verbal dispute quickly became a physical fight, at which point the guns game out.
One round was fired inside the train, and then the shooting spilled out onto the platform. Police sources tell FOX 5 NY's Lisa Evers that each suspect was allegedly armed with a semi-automatic handgun, and fired off at least 19 rounds combined.
Bullets hit six people ranging in age from 14 to 71.
One of the bullets struck and killed 35-year-old Obed Beltran-Sanchez, who has no known address.
It's believed that a 14-year-old who was struck by a bullet was one of the intended targets.
"We believe one of our victims, who is a 14-year-old, is possibly one of the other shooters. He has since been arrested on a separate nonfatal shooting that occurred on January 15th," said Kenny.
Officials say the shooting is part of a series of revenge attacks by rival gangs.
"They’re two youth crews that are beefing. We’re getting some preliminary information that it may have been over some drill rapping. The incident that happened in January was definitely a dispute between these 2 crews. This incident seems to be retaliation for that," Kenny explained.
Police are asking for help finding a third suspect in the shooting who is still at large.
Anyone with information is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
