9 a.m. PROTECTING CHILDREN POST-KATRINA — Ten years after Hurricane Katrina wreaked havoc along the U.S. Gulf Coast, leaving 1,833 dead, Save the Children and Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) are convening a high-profile U.S. Senate briefing to assess the federal government's current capacity to help states protect children from a major disaster. New research has identified important areas of progress as well as major gaps that remain in the federal governments efforts to address 81 recommendations made in the 2010 final report of the bipartisan National Commission on Children and Disasters formed after Katrina. Rep. Grace Meng (D-NY) will join Sen. Cassidy in offering opening remarks.
