An alligator crawling around while you're out for a jog is not what you want to see in the park. The NYPD's 110th Precinct is leading the search for the alligator they call "Jaws," apparently spotted by a runner in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park on Saturday.
It was reportedly three and a half feet long with a thick build, hanging out near the water. Officers checked out the area near the Van Wyck Expressway but didn't find it.
Flushing Meadows-Corona Park is about 1,200 acres with lots of marshy areas. The alligator really could be anywhere.
This isn't the first time a non-native animal has made its way to the park. The long, slimy northern snakehead, better known as the Franken fish because of its unappealing looks, was found in Meadow Lake. The Asian fish is an alien predator and can seriously harm the ecosystem. Just like this sign says, if you catch one you should not release it ack into the wild.
As for the alligator, the Parks Department says urban park rangers are ready to remove the non-native animal at a moment's notice.
Until then, park goers will keep an eye out for Jaws.
On Twitter, the 110th Precinct posted: "No jaws sightings for today." It even started the hashtag #gatorsighting110 to keep the public posted on the search.
