2 sleeping in dumpster hurt when bin gets emptied into truck

VANCOUVER, Washington (AP) — Authorities say two people sleeping in a trash bin in Washington state were injured when a garbage truck picked up the container and emptied it into a compactor.

Clark County Battalion Chief Larry Reese says the driver stopped the machine Friday in Vancouver when he heard screams. A woman suffered a pelvic injury, and a man had an undisclosed injury described as minor.

Reese says both were taken to a hospital.

It's not uncommon for homeless people in the region to sleep in dumpsters to stay warm and dry. There have been several incidents in recent years of people getting injured or killed after being tossed into garbage trucks.
