A volunteer firefighter from New York was killed Saturday night while battling a house fire. 19-year-old Jack Rose of the Mount Marion Fire Department was pronounced dead after being found unresponsive at the scene of a chimney fire in Ulster County that broke out just before 7 p.m.
According to authorities, Rose became separated from his team and soon went into distress. At some point, a mayday call for help went out and firefighters eventually located him. Rose was taken to HealthAlliance Hospital and pronounced dead.
Rose, a three-year member of the Mt. Marion Fire Department, was recently elected to the position of Captain. Mt. Marion Fire Chief Dave Ayers stated his department “is devastated over the loss of such a young life and a devoted member of the community,” adding that Rose was loved by all in the fire service who knew him.
